This is the only case where your counselor would be able to access this though. In the meantime, you can remain anonymous by using any “nickname” you like.

An e-mail will notify you when your therapist has been selected, and you can begin messaging at that time. Your therapist will share guidelines and information about what you can expect from therapy.

Most of the testers disliked the automated system of being matched to a therapist. One evaluator said, “Even though the Regain sign-up is a very thorough survey, it’s still automated, and that leaves room for error and the potential for someone to be paired with the incorrect match. This could mean having to spend time and money in order to find a new counselor who is a better fit.”

And one evaluator didn’t really take any issue with the process of changing therapists: “I asked to switch counselors at the beginning because the initial counselor I was paired with exclusively did video therapy and I preferred communicating via messenger, and that switch was handled quickly and efficiently.”

Overall, our testers found the service to be pretty intuitive and the Regain desktop site and the app are easy to use. The private, dedicated “room” you’ll be given to communicate with your therapist looks similar to any social media chat space.

You’ll receive an e-mail notification when your therapist replies to a message from you or your partner. You can always go back and read the previous messages from your counselor at any time. And messages remain available throughout your treatment. Otherwise, all written communication is viewable by all parties.

Unfortunately, there currently isn’t a way to schedule a three-way live session for both of you with the therapist if you aren’t able to share a laptop or smartphone for the session, and our testers pointed out that it was a bit frustrating.

All of the therapists at Regain are trained psychologists, licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed clinical social workers, or licensed professional counselors. All of them have a master’s or doctoral degree in their field of study.

Also, they have all been certified by their state’s professional board and have at least three years and 2,000 hours of experience in the mental health profession.

The therapists at Regain might also offer worksheets. To some people, this may guide the conversation and make communication feel more professional. For others, it might feel impersonal.
