Highlights

First aid covers a wide variety of issues from life-threatening emergencies to minor illnesses and injuries. It's important to be self-sufficient, but it's also important to know when to seek professional help. Getting the help you need when you need it is about knowing how to call, when to call, and what to do until help gets there.

Experience

Rod Brouhard is a paramedic, journalist, researcher, educator and advocate for emergency medical service providers and patients. He started as a volunteer firefighter in 1987 and fell in love with emergency medical services. Rod's been viewing life through the flashing glow of emergency lights ever since. Today, Rod leads a team of dedicated EMS professionals in San Francisco, California.

Rod's first book, "Life's Little Emergencies: A Handbook for Active Independent Seniors and Caregivers," covers first aid and emergency response.

Rod writes and speaks about first aid, disaster response and preparedness, and emergency medical services. His experience with disasters and major events includes emergency medical planning and response for Super Bowl 50, hurricane Katrina, hurricane Ike, coordinating responders for hurricane Sandy, tsunami preparedness, and many wildfires.

Rod regularly contributes to newspapers, magazines, websites and national EMS trade publications. He was a featured guest on CNN Radio and on "Fox News Live with Jamie Colby."

Rod is a member and former chair of the Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council in San Francisco and served on the advisory committee for the paramedic program at California State University, Stanislaus. He trained paramedic preceptors in adult education techniques. He developed a curriculum for high-performance CPR and rolled out the program to over 350 responders from a dozen different agencies.

Education

Rod completed his paramedic training in 1991 and has been continuously licensed in California ever since. He's been certified in several specialties throughout his career, including emergency medical dispatch, advanced cardiac life support (provider and instructor), international trauma life support, pediatric advanced life support and—of course—CPR.

Rod graduated magna cum laude from American Intercontinental University with a bachelor's degree in business, focusing on healthcare management.
